Teaching artists skilled in evidence-based practices demonstrate the art of teaching in and through the arts.  This module features Tara Middleton, a jazz musician.

Create your own sound with jazz singing

Singers like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, and Nat King Cole have left an indelible mark on American popular music through their jazz vocal stylings, fusing a conversational delivery with rhythmic and melodic improvisation.

This lesson is designed to teach the unique characteristics of jazz singing and how to apply these characteristics to create an original sound.

The purpose of this course is to provide participants with an in-depth study and performance of jazz vocals. Participants will be able to understand and discern between different jazz styles and perform them accordingly. Additionally, participants will become more aurally aware of the elements of this specific musical genre (such as tone, rhythm, melodies, and harmonies which are particular to this style). Finally, participants will be asked to think critically and creatively about music.
